Cloud vs on-device dictation: what to know about privacy

When you dictate, your voice has to be turned into text somewhere. Where that happens, in the cloud or on your own device, is the single biggest privacy question in dictation, and it quietly separates the popular apps from the privacy-focused ones. Here is what actually matters.
The two approaches
- Cloud processing. Your audio is sent to a server, converted to text, and returned. This is how most polished apps work, including Wispr Flow by default. It enables strong accuracy and features without heavy local hardware.
- On-device processing. The audio never leaves your machine; a local model does the work. This is the privacy-first approach used by open-source tools like Handy and OpenWhispr, and available in apps like Superwhisper.
When the difference matters
- It usually does not for everyday writing: emails, notes, chat. Cloud dictation is comparable to any other cloud tool you already use.
- It matters a lot for sensitive material: legal, medical, financial, or confidential business content. If audio of that leaving your device is a problem, you want on-device processing.
- It matters for regulation. Fields with compliance rules (HIPAA, for example) need the right setup; some tools offer this only on team or enterprise plans.
How to choose
- List what you will dictate. If none of it is sensitive, cloud is fine and you get the best features.
- If some is sensitive, either keep that content off cloud dictation or choose an on-device tool for it.
- On Linux or need offline? On-device open-source tools are your path anyway.

Cloud dictation is not "unsafe"; it is a normal trade of some data flow for accuracy and polish. On-device dictation trades a little polish and convenience for keeping your voice on your machine.
